Comedian Kathy Griffin says President Donald Trump and his family are trying to ruin her life.
Speaking at a press conference amidst the backlash of her recent controversial photo depicting the president’s severed head, Griffin, with her lawyer by her side, said President Trump is a bully.
“If you don’t stand up, you get run over. What’s happening to me has never happened in the history of this great country. A sitting President of the United States and his grown children and the First Lady, I feel, are personally trying to ruin my life forever. You guys know him, he’s never going to stop. I know him.”
Since Griffin posted a picture of her holding the likeness of President Donald Trump’s severed head on Tuesday, numerous venues across the country have cancelled her upcoming comedy stage shows. CNN said she would no longer co-host its live New Year’s Eve special from Times Square with Anderson Cooper.
The comic apologized on social media earlier this week for the photo, saying she made a mistake and that she was wrong. “I’m a comic. I cross the line. I move the line, and then I cross it. I went way too far.”
At today’s presser, Griffin said her apology still stands. “Regarding the image, that apology absolutely still stands. I feel horrible. If I could redo the whole thing, I would have a blow-up doll and ketchup.”
Griffin says her life has been threatened because of the photo. “I’m teasing the President. This is America and you shouldn’t have to die for it. The death threats are constant and they are detailed and they are serious and they are specific. Today it’s me and tomorrow it could be you.”
The comedian says she just wants to continue to make people laugh. “I improvise, I try jokes. I don’t want this to happen to anyone else. I tour for a living. I love doing it. I only know how to do comedy one way. It’s in your face comedy. I keep it real. I’m going to make fun of the President. I’m going to make fun of him more now. I’m not going to threaten him. I have no desire to harm him. I made fun of W. I made fun of Clinton. You could make dress jokes all day long and nobody tried to kill you. You shouldn’t have to die for this. I’m under a Secret Service investigation.”
After the controversial picture came out, Trump tweeted that Griffin “should be ashamed of herself. My children, especially my 11 year old son, Barron, are having a hard time with this. Sick!”
Even Chelsea Clinton defended Trump by tweeting, “This is vile and wrong. It is never funny to joke about killing a president.”
Some fellow comedians are speaking out in support of Griffin. Jamie Foxx told Entertainment Tonight, “There’s a lot of people out here doing really bad things, and every time a comedian says anything, says something about peanuts, people say, ‘You’re peanut-shaming!’ A comedian says something about dolphins, people say, ‘Oh my god, you’re a dolphin-shamer.’ “We’re the comics, we’re entertainers, we don’t mean any harm. It’s not the comedian’s fault for everything that’s going wrong.”
Actor Jim Carrey also spoke in defense of Griffin to Entertainment Tonight, “If you step out into that spotlight and you’re doing the crazy things that Trump is doing, we’re the last line of defense. And really, comedians are the last voice of truth in this whole thing.”
“I’m not for everybody,” said Griffin at her press conference. “I’ve had everybody turn on me and I just want to make people laugh. I screwed up. I’m not laying down for this guy. I’m going to make fun of him. He does provide a lot of material. It’s a good time to be a comedian. It’s scary to be a citizen.”
